From www.abc.net.au: Older homeowners in Western Sydney are deterred from downsizing due to the high costs of stamp duty, with some, like Lance Williams, expressing frustration over needing to pay significant sums that could impact their retirement funds.

Economic research suggests that easing or exempting stamp duty for retirees could potentially facilitate about 100,000 additional property moves in New South Wales.

While some economists argue against the effectiveness of such exemptions in promoting downsizing, others indicate it could improve housing supply and benefit the overall market.
