Low-balance in-specie payment

From smsmagazine.com.au: Individuals in a self-managed superannuation fund can receive an in-specie benefit payment even if their account balance is lower than the asset’s value, provided another member also receives a payment and directs a portion to them.

This requires a formal request to the fund trustee detailing how the asset will be split.

An example involved two members, where one with a $600,000 balance could receive a $300,000 share of a property worth $1.8 million through a directed payment from the other member’s benefits.
