From www.accountantsdaily.com.au: The ATO is enhancing its oversight of AI activities to mitigate the risk of high-impact errors and ensure fairness in its processes, according to Deputy Commissioner Jeremy Hirschhorn.

He highlighted the necessity of maintaining human oversight in AI systems, noting past mistakes such as the Robodebt scandal, which underscored the dangers of over-relying on automated data processing.

Hirschhorn warned against “data hubris” and advocated for understanding taxpayer individual circumstances to prevent detrimental impacts from erroneous decisions.
